Agaves belong to the family Agavaceae and include not just Agave, but also Yucca, Furcrea, Manfreda, and Beschorneria. Monocarpic plants, Agaves flower once and then die. A bloom spike on an Agave is both mesmerizing and heartbreaking – gorgeous yet signaling the plant's nearing end. However, some Agaves may produce bulbils from their flower stalk and/or offset or sprout a series of suckers before the mother rosette passes. If you're fortunate, you could even collect some seed after the flowers fade and the plant forms seed pods.
